Dynamics Close to
Equilibrium
What happens when populations reach the limits to growth? Continuing
with the model constructed previously with A = 0.6, C
= 0.0001, d = 1, Q = 1:
- Use [F8] to simulate and enter a run length of 20,
an initial density of 10, press [N] to skip trends or steps,
and enter a standard deviation of 0. Replot several times at different
speeds on arithmetic (see figure)
and logarithmic (see figure)
scales.
- Enter the simulation routine with [F8] and set the
run length at 20. Set the initial density at equilibrium (6000)
and the standard deviation of the random variable at 0.1. Run
the same simulation several times. See figures for stochastic
dynamics on arithmetic and
logarithmic scales.
- Repeat the experiment with a standard deviations of 0.2 and
0.4. Notice the irregular oscillations around equilibrium
